The CTL line or stamping line takes the main coil of flat rolled steel from an integrated mill or mini mill and decoils, flattens and cuts the sections to exact length and stacks the sheets into a bundle. Fittings vary depending on the width, thickness and weight of the incoming coil. Depending on the end product to be used from the cut sheet, flatness can be a critical issue and the process can use double leveler, skin pass or stretch leveler.
Stop-Go CTL (Straight Line Mode)
stop-go lines are cheaper than continuous CTL. The tape is quickly fed along the line, then released and stopped completely.The stationary shears are activated and the sheet metal or the blank is produced to the specified length. Narrow line configurations can be a good choice when system footprint is limited as they tend to be shorter than free loop designs. Foundation costs are lower because ring holes are not required, and the measurement capabilities of narrow-line machines are virtually unlimited, making them ideal for thick gauge applications. Narrow line machines with stationary shears have the lowest cost of all
cut-to-length lines, but they also have the lowest productivity. Also, narrow gauge machines can damage thinner materials since visible roller marks can appear where the material stops in the grader.Flying shears can be installed to increase production, especially on heavy caterpillars. The ASP flying shears must be perfectly matched to the speed and position of the conveyor belt. It is possible to get synced, but the cost is usually significant.
Continuous CTL (Free Loop Mode)
With this CTL variant, the tape leaves the main reel and runs through a flattener and/or leveler. Depending on the thickness and cutting speed, the strip is now guided at a constant speed into a ring pit of the desired depth. At the other end of the loop, a separate servo measures the material and feeds it to the shears.The scissors can be fixed or flying. Continuous CTL is best when cutting lighter gauges, typically less than 0.125 inch.
Trapezoidal CTL
In this configuration, the scissors cut at angles from 90 degrees perpendicular to the blade to 30 degrees tangential. These sheets or blanks are mainly used in the automotive industry and cones.The original patent for the tapered rod cut to length belongs to our founder, Ford B. Cauffiel.
